LeTourneau University junior Martha Jeske of Tyler, Texas, received a $5,000 Jenzabar Foundation Student Leadership Award to develop a community garden at LeTourneau University.
Jeske is a student in LETU’s Honors College and was named a “Honey Princess” by the East Texas Beekeepers Association.
Jeske wrote the grant as part of her Honors Class called “Loving Longview” in the Fall of 2015.
In her presentation at the Gaylord Texan, Jeske outlined her vision for the community garden “to unite the student body and meet the needs of the community by cultivating fresh garden produce.” She hopes her outcomes will build relationships between students and the campus neighbors, equip students and school children with gardening experience, provide an outlet for integrated learning in collaboration between academic departments and research projects and to expand knowledges through lectures from guest speakers.
